My Thoughts on CHA

If you missed some of the pictures I took at CHA (I have about 100 more!), look HERE.
Several have asked why Paris Hilton would be at a craft and hobby show (good question!). From what I understand, a company bought the rights to use her name on a line of scrapbook items for young girls. It wasn't my style, but will definitely appeal to the tweens!

I loved being at CHA and would go again in a minute! But I would take a rolling cart! You could tell who had been there before, or who had talked to someone that had been there before, because they were smart and had big rolling suitcases or carts to carry everything in! Between the freebies, catalogs, and make and takes, I needed a massage by the end of the day (and there were massage booths there even, although I didn't take advantage of that!)!

It was so much fun to see all of the new stuff. Coming from a small town, the only scrapbook and card companies' products I see are those that Hobby Lobby sells (which isn't much), or those online. There were so many products I had never even heard of! Craft heaven!

It was also delightful to meet so many online friends, and "celebs"! I had a short painting make and take with Donna Dewberry. My mom is a painter and has watched her show for years and has most of her books. So my little heart daisy make and take went to my mom yesterday and she loved it! I forgot to take a picture of that. Tim Holtz is as good looking as everyone says, and Dee Greunig still looks amazing! I fell in love with Glimmer Mist and the new Basic Grey papers, and found a whole lot of stuff I would love to have. It's a good thing I wasn't a buyer!

I took two classes, a watercolor class with Jerri Kay Jimenez, and a "Vintage Girlfriends" class, sponsored by Crafty Secrets. LOVED them both. Both were stretches for me, but a lot of fun. I hope to post some pictures later today of those make and takes. I still have to finish one thing from each class! Jerri Kay will be posting what we made in the class on her blog either today or tomorrow, so you can head over there and see what it was supposed to look like - then head back here tomorrow to see what mine ended up looking like! :)

It was really a delight to meet so many of the Our Daily Bread designs Design Team and to hang out with those gals. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. I forced three of them to go to Disneyland on Monday, and we had a great time there screaming on the rides and fussing that Haunted Mansion was closed.

Here are two of the projects we made at the Crafty Secrets class.

I don't normally lean toward vintage style, so this was fun! The card on the left opens with the scallop piece and has a little design inside that says "Party Time". We got sooooo much fun stuff at this class. Paper, stickers, ribbons, glimmer mist....LOTS of stuff to bring home and use on dozens of other projects!

This summer I am directing "My Fair Lady" so I will skip Orlando's CHA, but I am looking forward to next year in Anaheim already!

Super Sunday Sale at Hambo Stamps!

Super Sunday = SUPER Sale!!!
Because Hambo Stamps has a special fondness for PIGskin, we're celebrating Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 1) by offering 30% off ALL in-stock regular-priced stamps! Stamps on our "Retiring" page will also be discounted at either the 30% off regular price OR the sale price listed, whichever is the greater discount. Because of the limited quantities of some designs, all orders will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
PLUS - We're offering a chance to win your entire order FREE! When you place your order, give us your best guess as to the FINAL point total of the game -- that is, the total of points that both teams have scored, added together. The first person to guess the exact total or come closest will receive their stamps free of charge! Please note that while the 30% off sale runs the entire day, only orders received prior to kick-off will be in the running for the free stamps.
Other details:
  • The sale will run from midnight Sat. (1/31) to midnight Sunday (2/1).
  • Only in-stock stamps are eligible for the discount -- no back-orders available.
  • Free shipping does NOT apply during this sale, but all orders will be figured at actual postage rates.
  • To be eligible for the free stamps, your guess as to final point total MUST be received prior to the kick-off of the game.
  • Please be sure to include your name & mailing address with your order, and specify whether you want mounted (M) or unmounted (UM) stamps.
  • Payments for orders not received within 10 days will negate the discount.
  • The winner of the free stamps will be notified on Monday, Feb. 2. If the winner has already paid, the payment will be promptly refunded.
Here's hoping everyone scores big! :)

Some fun pictures from CHA

You can put your mouse on the pictures to see some of the captions and people in the pictures!

Top o' the Morning!

Well, I am back from CHA, and am uploading my photos as I type this! In the meantime, here is a card I made for today's SCS Ways To Use It Challenge: Bottoms Up! We had to have some connection to alcohol on our card, whether Copic markers, alcohol inks, themed stamps, or whatever! I chose to do the Polished Stone technique with reinkers and cotton balls. I know there are several ways to do this technique, but THIS is how I do it. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this page for more color examples.

This beautiful Celtic Cross is from "May God Hold You" which will be released by Our Daily Bread Designs on February 1st. It has two sizes of crosses, two Irish blessings, and a single line sentiment, along with two shamrock vines. It's a beautiful set, and believe it or not, it matches the pattern I have in my ring that I bought when I was in Ireland last May!

I used Mint Melody (retired SU!), Old Olive, and Encore Gold reinkers for my polished stone colors. The gold is so sparkly, but doesn't show up here (it looks more like a darker green in the photo). I sponged the edges of the Always Artichoke paper with Encore Gold, and then embossed with Gold EP (Stampin' Up!). The background paper is from DCWV - Old World MatStack - one of my favorites! I also used Prismatic Metallic Gold for layers. I used the Fiskars ribbon slot punch and threaded my grosgrain moss ribbon in, along with a bit of gold cord.

Be sure to come back later today to see some pictures from CHA!

Stamps: May God Hold You (ODBD)
Paper: Glossy White, Always Artichoke, Prismatic Gold Metallic, Mellow Moss, Old World MatStack (DCWV)
Ink: Black Stazon, Mint Melody (retired), Old Olive, Encore Gold
Accessories: Nestabilities, Gold EP, Fiskars ribbon slot punch, moss grosgrain, gold cord
Techniques: Polished Stone

A Hambo DT TV Challenge!

Monica has such fun ideas for the Hambo Stamps Design Team! I think this challenge is very timely, since all TVs are going digital soon. I am not liking the reception so far with the "box." No cable here!
This month our challenge was to make a card inspired by a TV show. It can be a very literal inspiration, or deal with the characters on a show, either present or past. So here it what I came up with:

Can you figure out the TV show? :)
It's one of my favorites, and it's not Lost, American Idol, or 24! I have to give credit to my husband -- I could not think of a good idea (well, I HAD one, but Monica already thought of it too -- the globe with "As the World Turns"!), so I told him to start naming TV shows that were cool, oldies, or ones I watch. As he named them, I thought about all my Hambo Stamps. And when he finally said "BONES" -- I knew what I was going to do!
The inside has a computer generated sentiment that says "No bones about it, you're in my thoughts!"

Be sure to check out all the Design Team's ideas for this fun challenge:

Jane

Monica

And to be really amazed, don't miss this amazing tutorial by the artist behind those fun and quirky Hambo Stamps: TIMBO!

This morning at 7:00 a.m. I am taking a class at CHA in Anaheim from none other than Jerri Kay Jimenez - the watercolor queen! I am thrilled to be able to watch and learn from her, and hope to have some ideas for new projects when I return tomorrow night. Have a great day!

A Great Product That I Love!

My friends will tell you that I am very fussy about keeping my stamps clean. I want them all to look like I just bought them. So when I get a bit of ink on the wood, or the black ink doesn't want to come off, I am not happy!

I think I have used every stamp cleaner out there known to man (or woman!). I have at least seven different brands in my stamp room. Well, when those are gone, it is ONE cleaner for me! I am sure many of you already use this product, but if you don't, it is a MUST-HAVE!
Ultra Clean™ cleans even the most difficult stamping inks. Ultra Clean™ also keeps your stamp scrubber clean by washing most of the ink out of the scrubber when rinsed with water. It takes off every trace of any kind of black ink -- and I have about all of the black inks there are!

It has a very light scent, and doesn't bother my nose at all! The only drawback, and this doesn't really bother me, is that it is a tad oily. So, I clean my stamps only once a day, and then do not have to worry about getting any residue on my projects. If I need the same stamp for a project, and have to clean up before the end of the day, I just use a non-oily cleaner, such as Stampin' Up's Stampin' Mist, or I make sure my hands are oil-free.

Another great option for cleaning is Simple Green. Simple Green is a multi-purpose cleaner that will clean just about anything in your house. Simple Green is non-toxic, biodegradeable, non-hazardous, non-flammable, and non-corrosive. The correct ratio for simple green as a stamp cleaner is:

1/4 c simple green
1/2 c water (I use distilled)

Put it in a spray bottle and you are ready to go!

Give these products a try. I find Simple Green in the auto section at Wal-Mart, and Ultra Clean™ at many online stores.

And right now - I am on my way to CHA! Tonight I will be meeting many friends I have made through stamping online -- and am excited to share pictures with you soon!

A Little Sparkle and a Little Pop

Well, I am a little overwhelmed with this busy week! I know you all have weeks like that, where you seem to never make a dent in the pile of "to-do" or laundry, or in your responsibilities. It happens, doesn't it?

As many of you know, I will be leaving for California tomorrow (driving to the three hour away airport) to catch an early flight to LAX for the Craft and Hobby Association convention this week. I will be gone until Wednesday, but I hope to schedule some posts about some really fun things while I am gone, including what is happening at CHA. I will be highlighted some products I LOVE that you must try, and also showing you a fun challenge with the Hambo Design Team on Tuesday.

Today I have a monochromatic card with a pop of color to show you. My stamped sentiment is from He is Risen! by Our Daily Bread designs. I have really liked this set, and know that it will get a lot of use. My background paper is by Best Memories, which is a WalMart brand. I was really pleased with this pack of paper. It has some beautiful designs that are easy to embellish, while not overwhelming the card design. I added Diamond Stickles to my butterfly for a little pop of sparkle. The ribbon is from my hoarded stash of Burgundy Satin, which I wish Stampin' Up! would sell again. The pearls and white flowers are from Stampin' Up!'s Pretties Kit, and the white tulle flowers are from my stash of odds and ends.

I like how this turned out -- the sentiment is still the main focus of the card (layered on Nestabilities), but the burgundy adds a little pizazz!

Thanks for stopping by today! I don't know if I will be able to post a new project before I leave, so if not, have a great weekend!

A House Mouse Color Challenge!

Our challenge this week is a color challenge:

Cameo Coral (a slight peachy pink)
Old Olive (a rich olive green)
Night of Navy (navy blue in its finest!)

I have listed the colors using Stampin' Up! colors, just because that is common on Splitcoaststampers, however, ANY brand that matches closely is fine for the challenge. HERE OR HERE (the second one is perhaps a little truer color) are places to find what they look like so you can match what you have with these. You can also use any neutrals (as in gray and brown to color the Mousies, Hoppers, or Gruffies! - and white or vanilla), but please have some of all three colors on your card somewhere (solid paper, ink, designer paper, embellishments). Have fun with the "challenge"!

Here is what I came up with this week:
I really like this cute image, but boy, did it take a long time to color and paint the flowers! I used Cameo Coral (and various shades with more water added) for the flowers, and I painted the stems with Old Olive. The Navy is in the designer paper (Basic Grey) and a layer of cardstock behind that.

We also have a wonderful prize package up for grabs for you this week thanks to our sponsor TheRubberCafe.com. One lucky person will win the House Mouse Stamp Glitter Hearts (so perfect for Valentine's Day) and a jar of Shimmerz Paints in the limited edition color Wintergreen Bling.

Here is a bit about our sponsor TheRubberCafe.com:
The Rubber Cafe has fantastic prices and low shipping charges (including internationally) on all your stamping needs. We have a large selection of stamps including House Mouse, Happy Hoppers and Gruffies, and also sell stamping accessories and tools including Copic Markers, Shimmerz Paints, Glimmer Mists, and Scor-Pal products.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you will join in. Link your challenge cards and check out what the other Design Team members did HERE. See you tomorrow!

Have You Seen This Designer Paper?

I really like this designer paper. It has beautiful colors and such a neat collage look that isn't too busy and doesn't overwhelm the rest of the card. I love the warm colors in it. It's called Amazing Grace and is made by Flair designs. It's available HERE, along with a lot of other cool designs. Check it out! Here is a picture of the full paper design:
My layout and design today is inspired by Lori Craig, who was chosen for this week's SCS Featured Stamper. Lori has some beautiful creations in her gallery, and a lot of them have scripture verses. Although the card I cased is a floral design, I kept the basic layout and background using DP, and then changed it into a card to reflect all her scripture cards.

My stamps are from two different sets. The sentiment is from He is Risen! and the image is from Lift up Our Hands, both by Our Daily Bread designs.

Thanks for stopping by today! Tomorrow I have a House Mouse Color Challenge card to show you. I am busy this week getting ready to go to CHA at the end of the week, where I hope to get to meet some of you!

Stamps: Lift Up Our Hands & He is Risen! (ODBD)
Paper: Amazing Grace Paper by Flair, Very Vanilla, Really Rust, Chocolate Chip
Ink: Close to Cocoa
Accessories: oval punch, Nestabilities, velvet ribbon (American Crafts), metal gems (Mark Richards), paper piercer

I Am Always Inspired By Giraffes!

As many of you know, I collect giraffes. I have hundreds of them around the house and in my stamp room. I have many giraffes stamps as well, some of which you can see in this post (scroll down a bit).

So, it probably comes as no surprise that I chose THIS from PB Teen for today's SCS Inspiration Challenge 163. I used Jen's SFYTT for my layout today.

I got this cute giraffe from H & M Stamps at their garage sale last week, and really wanted to use it on something today! Perfect! The giraffe has Diamond Stickles on his body. I used my Sizzix Architectural Corner Die for a trellis for my leaves. I added a matching Sizzix corner on the inside of the card. I got this Basic Grey Urban Prairie paper in a blog candy win from my friend, Deb. I am finally glad to use that too!
Here is a close-up of my little trellis and the cute sentiment: "Valentine, I'd stretch my neck up for a smooch from you!"

On another note, I have had a wonderful past few days connecting with former students. One of my most favorite teaching times was 1984-1990, when I taught Choir and Drama in Utah at Kaysville Junior High School. Those kids were just such a really special bunch and I have thought of them often over the years. I have even kept in touch with two of them at Christmastime. But Facebook has changed all that this week, and I got to reconnect with many more of them - twenty years later! It has been fun to see them with their own families and to hear what they are doing.

I hope you are having a good weekend with your friends and families! Reconnect with someone this week!

Stamps: My Favorite Valentine (H & M Stamps)
Paper: Baja Breeze, SU Watercolor, Certainly Celery, Basic Grey Urban Prairie DP
Ink: Black Stazon, Tempting Turquoise, Certainly Celery, Kiwi Kiss, Close to Cocoa
Accessories: oval punch, Sizzix Architectural Corner Die, green gems, aqua brush, Diamond Stickles
Techniques: watercolor

Challenging and Fun!

I love Shimmerz! LOOK at all the different colors there are! Angel Wings is a must have for starters! You can win an entry for a free jar of your choice by participating in this awesome sketch challenge, hosted by Our Daily Bread designs. Check out this fun sketch:
Use any ODBD stamps as the focal image on your card. Leave a comment on THIS POST with a link to your card. If you are uploading to SCS, please use these two codes (ODBDSC01 and ODBD) so we can find your cards there, too! As for the sketch, just remember that you can turn it, make it larger or smaller, or flip it – either the diamond or the square on top -- whatever works for your design. Square, round, or rectangle too!

Here is my version:
I used Angel Wings Shimmerz on my pearl trim - I am in love! It can go on just about anything~

You have until Midnight January 23 EST to join in the challenge for a chance to win! Three winners will be chosen from all entries received (one entry per person). We are so excited to see what you create. The Design Team members were very busy working on their projects to show you. Be sure to check out all of their marvelously inspiring designs!

Hope you can play along!

From ATC to a Card -- Voila!

Last week I posted my ATC card for the House Mouse & Friends blog challenge, not knowing that it was postponed to this week! So, you can see that post HERE.

I decided that I would make my ATC into a full-sized card today, so you could see how cute they are as the focal point of your project.

I used my Aluminium Metallic paper from Prism for the background, and added a layer of Pink Pirouette and Basic Grey Bittersweet DP. I punched a Photo Corner using the metallic paper again, added some sparkly buttons from Doodlebug, a sweet little pearl to the package, and my card is ready to send!

To see more House Mouse ATCs, click HERE.
Have a wonderful Monday! I will be back tomorrow with a sketch challenge and prizes to win!

Judy CASEing Judy!

Today's SCS Featured Stamper is one of my favorite artists - jaydekay! Her name is Judy too! She has a glorious gallery, which you must check out, especially if you love flowers! She is a master at putting together beautiful works of art!

I chose THIS CARD of Judy's to case. I kept her layout and overall theme, and changed colors and images. I thought that the color of the red DP said what words couldn't.

The cross image is from He is Risen! -- a new January release available at Our Daily Bread designs. Check out the fun stuff at ODBD HERE! You can win some Shimmerz!

Stamps: He is Risen! (ODBD)
Paper: Basic Grey Bittersweet DP, Naturals Ivory, Chocolate Chip
Ink: Chocolate Chip
Accessories: Martha Stewart branch punch, paper flowers, pearl gem, ticket corner punch, Cuttlebug Swiss Dots EF

Inspired by a Snail Trail

For today's Inspiration Challenge 162, Stef chose Japanese Tenugui towels for us to browse. There were so many neat designs I was having a hard time choosing --- until I came upon this fun towel made into an apron:
I have several snail stamps - they just seem to appeal to me! The one I used is from a set by SUInk called At A Snail's Pace. I stamped the little snail in Brocade Blue ink, and filled in the shell with Diamond Stickles. The background is made with the Cuttlebug Swirl Embossing Folder. I brayered it with Night of Navy ink to give the swirls color.

My sentiment is from Rubber Stamp Tapestry, which you can find HERE.
The Nestabilities I used are also available and in stock at RST HERE.

My card also fits another fun blog that you must check out (I am sure a lot of you have been there!) called Our Creative Corner. Today's challenge was to use two shades of blue and one neutral color.

I hope you have a wonderful Saturday! Enjoy what you are doing!

Valentine Love: Great News, Good News, Some News!

Today I worked with one of my peg stamp sets from Rubber Stamp Tapestry called Heart Deco. It has such fun little hearts and foliage to make such pretty wreaths and borders. The inks I used led me to the cardstock colors, and then to the ribbon. I love the combination of pinks and greens, but when I was all done, it turned out a little Christmas-y perhaps. That's okay, because by the time I send this as a Valentine, Christmas will be long gone!

I added two rows of pearls to the sentiment frame to coordinate with the pearls in the corners of the main panel. For a fabulous tutorial on how to make a card similar to this, visit RST's brand new blog: Tapestry Stamp Techniques. Susan Walton, the owner, of Rubber Stamp Tapestry does a marvelous job of showing how easy it is to work with peg stamps to create beautiful projects!

AND, if you scroll all the way down, you will see my card there! Yep, I am a new designer for Rubber Stamp Tapestry! (That is the GREAT news!) I am thrilled about this, as I love their stamps, and the way that one set can make oodles of different, beautiful wreaths and garlands, as well as any other design you can think of! HERE is a detailed description of how I made my card, with measurements and ink colors from RST. Check out the RST website - they have so much to offer, from stamps to inks, to accessories, to Nestabilities too!

End of stamping news/beginning of personal news!

And now for the rest of the news today: Many of you have been praying for me and know that today I had my second appointment with the hand surgeon to talk about the results of the nerve test I had last Friday. He has determined that I only need surgery on my left hand, and that it will fix the numbness and tingling I have there (good news!). He does not recommend surgery for my right hand now (also good news!), because the pain from my right hand is from osteo-arthritis (not great or good news, but some news!), not carpal tunnel (great news!).

He told me that I will need six weeks of NOTHING with my left hand (no stamping, no piano playing, no keyboarding) and that surgery will need to be scheduled two weeks in advance. Since I have an elementary music program coming up March, it isn't going to work to have it done before March 31. I am going to CHA and Disneyland in about two weeks and I need my hands to hold on when we ride the Indiana Jones ride!

But I am really happy that my right hand will keep me going after the surgery. I think I can stamp with only one hand (esp. the right!), I can type (albeit slowly) with just one hand, and I can play one-handed too! So that's the news!

And by the time I direct "My Fair Lady" this July, I will be all done! Thank you again for all your concern and well wishes. You all are wonderful!

A Tiny Little House Mouse!

After a two week embossing challenge during the holidays, House Mouse & Friends brings you a new challenge: ATC, also known as Artist Trading Cards. I am a huge fan of these little cards, and I have two big notebooks full of them that I have made and swapped.

ATC's are little cards, similar to a baseball card. The only standard requirement for an ATC is that its height and width measurements be 2.5" x 3.5" (64 x 89 mm), either vertical (portrait) or horizontal (landscape) orientation. The sky is the limit for every other aspect of the art.

Here is what I made for today's challenge:
This darling stamp is called "Monica's Gift." Isn't she sweet? I used Aluminum Metallic Prism paper for my background, layered with Pink Pirouette, Regal Rose, and Naturals White (Stampin' Up!). The sentiment is by Rubber Stamp Tapestry.
Edited later: Looks like the challenge was postponed, but I had already scheduled mine to post and didn't know about the postponement. So -- here is my submission early and next week I will show what it looks like made into a full-sized card, so check back!

Please read THIS info if you want to know more on the background of ATCs. For a cutting guide, click HERE. For supplies and various other ATC ephemera, click HERE.

I am doing a special challenge this year ("His Holy Name Challenge 2009") that Patter Cross has on her blog, Triple the Scraps. You can read all about this challenge HERE. I plan to make the ATC Rolodex cards like Patter did last year. You can see the picture HERE. I think it looks so cool! I love ATCs, already have a Rolodex punch (purchased at an office supply store for about $7), and am ready to go! At the end of the year, it will be a neat reminder of the talents that God has given me, and of who He is. You are welcome to join in!

Thanks for stopping by today! I appreciate all my readers and the comments that are left!

The Perfect Valentine

I love it when what you are thinking your card will look like actually makes it to the paper and turns out the same! :)
Today's Featured Stamper at SCS is Julie Ebersole - aka Julie HRR. She is #100 in the Featured Stamper Challenges - and what a perfect choice! I chose THIS CARD of Julie's to case. I wish I had that label Nestabilities - that would have been perfect for the shape of my verse, and more like what Julie had on her card, but I still haven't ordered it yet!
I brayered my Cuttlebug embossed background with Riding Hood Red (I LOVE this color - will have to really stock up!), and then added a lace edging. The wonderful sparkle is from Doodlebug's Lily White Sugar Coated paper -- I got several pieces at Hobby Lobby last week when all the paper was on sale!
A few pearls here and there (Does anyone have a good source for these in bulk? I like the half pearls!) and all done!

This set is a new January release, He is Risen!, by Our Daily Bread designs. See more designs using this set HERE.

I think this is the Perfect valentine!

Dina Kowal {aka Mama Dini} is celebrating her January 1st birthday all week long this week, and has been giving away all sorts of prizes. Tomorrow the prize is from Our Daily Bread designs, so be sure to check out her blog for a chance to win some great stuff!

On another note, for those who have been praying for my hands (I obviously got to stamp the last few days!), THANK YOU! I have had a good week as far as pain goes. I had a nerve test (ever had one of those -- shocks and needles! Fun!) that determined I have moderately severe carpal tunnel and the beginnings of osteo-arthritis in my right hand. So, I go to the hand surgeon on Friday to see what he says about a timeline for surgery. Don't want to miss stamping for 6 weeks, so I will have to learn to do it one-handed! :)

Stop back tomorrow for a fun House Mouse challenge - one I chose!

Hey Mothermark!

Open letter to Cindy Motherway:

You need to let it go. Really. You know pining after the Sexy Cowboy just makes you upset. You will never have him. He is elusive and never around when you want/need him.

What you need is Cowboy Joe! He is ready to lasso you with his rope of friendship! He is easy to find:
www.hambostamps.com/southwest.htm
and he is so smart that he knows there are no sahuaro cactus in Monument Valley (a shout out to all his Arizona friends!).

He even made a cake for you:

What do you think? Give him a try, Mothermark!
He wore his best silver star and even looks like he has bathed in the last week, unlike some *other* cowboys we know.......

I am still out of town today, enjoying some family time (it gets less and less when the kids hit college, doesn't it?), but tomorrow I will be back with a project to show you. I am hosting the SCS Limited Supplies Challenge tomorrow too, so check it out and play! It's something everyone can do!
